Tunnel Mural
The Visual Arts Department has collaborated again with the City of Commerce City to make the tunnel under Quebec more inviting and safe for students walking to and from school. Saturday 24, 2022, student volunteers met with Ratha Sok (professional mural artist) to help paint the walls of the tunnel. The day started off with presentations from our guests. Marty Walsh, the Recreation Superintendent for the City, gave students an explanation of the project. From there, the students went down to clean up the tunnel before spending the rest of the day painting the design Sok created onto the walls of the tunnel. This mural has taken a long time to plan. Walsh contacted the visual arts teachers, Mike Rogers and Lisa Holloway, about collaborating with students, teachers, and alumni of ACHS as volunteers on the project. He started gathering funding and working on logistics for the project as early as spring of 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic created a lot of delays but we were excited to finally get started on September 25th. The mural will be finished by Sok soon, possibly followed by new security cameras and new LED lighting though the tunnel's passageway to be installed by the city. Once everything has been completed, the students will be invited back for a ribbon cutting ceremony in the spring. All these improvements will create a more inviting environment for students and will help to make the community an even more enjoyable and safe place to be.
